The owners of a skilled nursing home sought to add independent and assisted living to their site to provide a continuity of care and allow clients to age in place. An undulating topography enabled a basement area for resident storage to be economically incorporated.

A service corridor extension allows food service to be provided from the nursing home’s expanded central kitchen to the south which was redesigned to accommodate the added work volume from the 72-unit two-story addition.

Assisted and independent units are segregated by floor with common activity and support areas in the center. Balconies were incorporated for each unit to encourage residents to develop and maintain a connection with the outdoors, walking paths and plaza/ patio elements. The scale of the large building was broken up with gable forms and the balcony masses to fit well into the residential neighborhood.
