Minshall Residence
Kelly’s Island, OH
5,500 sf

This 100-acre site on Kelly’s Island included a century home to the south of the island which had been the family’s retreat and summer home for two generations. But the adjacent rock quarry’s 24/7 operation compelled the owner to construct a new residence out of noise range of the blasting and conveyors.

The program entailed formal living areas for a couple, their three grown children, anticipated grandchildren and a pool/ patio. After walking the site with the owners, an area at the island’s northwest corner adjacent to abandoned rock quarry was selected. With a state park to the north and 90 acres of own property to the south, peace and quiet were assured with access to fabulous sunset views as well as a view to Perry’s Monument.

A formal passive solar design was developed with a number of schemes, all perched at the edge of the quarry with the pool to the south for sunbathing. A crisp parti of open/ closed forms creates a welcoming composition for living and entertaining. An exterior comprised of recycled slate/ resin panels with zero moisture permeability assures a waterfront residence with the lowest possible maintenance obligations.
